I have the unique opportunity to live in Europe for 3 years. I have 18 months left and wanted to share some of what European supermarkets have to offer. I will be writing several posts on shopping in Europe and traveling with food allergies. Being from the US, I was shocked to not find a strip mall on every corner. Basically, anything I wanted was at my fingertips in the US. Living in Germany has changed me and my perspective on food and shopping.
The first supermarket I would like to introduce you to is Globus. Globus reminds me of a type of Walmart. You can buy beauty supplies, shoes, housewares, dishes, and food. Produce is in the center of the store, as well as the Bakery. You can have never seen so many brats in your life! A huge case lines the back of the store. Germans love their 3 B’s: Bread, Beer, and Brats! I will give the honorable mention to schnitzel and potatoes that reign on the top of German cuisine.
What I don’t find in Globus is consumer nutrition messaging. They do have nice sections for gluten free, lactose free, dairy free and vegan. In some way, they are hearing the cry for more allergen friendly foods. From a personal perspective, do you know hard it is to eat dairy free in Germany or France? Almost impossible!
Take a peak in my local Globus. Have visited any supermarkets in other countries? What did you think? Did you find what you were looking for?
