I love every sound and smell that comes with a cookout. The food is always the main attraction so it better be good, and yes, it can also be healthier.
Supermarkets across the country are gearing up for this weekend’s festivities with great sales. Bagged salads, tomatoes, blueberries, and strawberries are usually top sale items for the produce department. Condiments, beans, buns, and paper items are hot grocery items. Deals on ground beef, chicken, hot dogs, and shrimp are plastered all over ad circulars. You can be sure to get a good deal on some of these items, but are you making the best choices for your cookout? Here are my top picks for better nutrition at your barbecue.
Hunts has taken High Fructose Corn Syrup out of their products and Heinz has followed with Simply Heinz.

Pepperidge Farm Wheat Sliders
These 100 calorie mini buns are great for kids or for sliders. Although with only 1 gram of fiber, it is carb counting friendly. One slider contains 17 grams of total carbohydrate per serving for diabetics not wanting to sink most of their carbs into a bigger bun. These are also free of high fructose corn syrup.
Rudi’s Organic Bakery Hot Dog & Hamburger Buns
Rudi’s 100% Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns tops my list with 5 grams of fiber but I do love the white buns for their careful use of ingredients and no added flavors, colors, or preservatives.
The first ingredient is tomato puree. Many barbeque sauces list high fructose corn syrup as the first ingredient, but Bulls-eye doesn’t contain it. It also tastes great!
